How We Got Started: Japan

The Birth of the Charis Alliance Movement in Japan

In 1984, Cecil and Debbie O'Dell embarked on a life-changing journey to Japan, becoming the first Encompass World Partners missionaries to enter Asia. This momentous step laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Japan’s chapter of the Charis Alliance.

The O'Dells arrived in Japan with a heart for the nation and a strong commitment to cultural adaptation. Seeking to build authentic connections with the local people, they immersed themselves in the language and customs. Their approach was both strategic and spiritual, recognizing that Tokyo was an ideal launching pad for their ministry.

Over the next three years, the O'Dells worked tirelessly in Tokyo, planting seeds and nurturing a growing community of believers. Their hard work paid off in 1987, when Japan’s first Charis church was officially established. It became a sanctuary for worship, fellowship, and discipleship, where people could find spiritual refuge and purpose in the bustling metropolis.

But this achievement didn’t come without challenges. The O'Dells faced numerous obstacles, including limited resources, difficulty learning the language, and cultural barriers posed by Japan’s dominant religious views. Yet, they remained steadfast, trusting in God’s guidance and provision. Through their perseverance, the first Charis church in Tokyo blossomed, serving as a hub for community and spiritual growth in the heart of Japan’s capital.

The Growth of the Charis Movement in Japan

The O'Dells’ pioneering work laid the foundation for the continued expansion of the Charis Alliance in Japan. Today, the O'Dells’ legacy lives on through vibrant ministries across the country. From Okinawa to Osaka to Yamanashi, the movement has taken root in different regions, each with its unique challenges and opportunities.

In Okinawa, the Charis church shines as a beacon of hope in a place known for its distinct culture. With a diverse population, Okinawa offers a rich mission field, and the church there is committed to reaching people from all walks of life.

In Osaka, a new Charis ministry is emerging in this bustling urban center known for its dynamic energy and cultural diversity. This startup ministry is driven by a passion for reaching the city’s people with the gospel. Our Osaka team is working hard to build relationships and share Christ’s love in meaningful ways.

In Yamanashi, another Charis ministry is emerging at foothills of the Japanese Alps. Surrounded by natural beauty and history, our team is drawing people closer to God and to one another, meeting the community’s spiritual and practical needs.

The Call to Prayer and Support

As the Charis Alliance in Japan continues to grow, the need for prayer and support from the global body of believers is more pressing than ever. Here are four key prayer requests to guide your intercession:

  • Wisdom and Discernment: Pray for our leaders and missionaries in Japan to have insight and understanding as they navigate the complexities of Japanese culture and spirituality. Ask God to help them communicate the gospel effectively and build meaningful relationships.

  • Unity and Collaboration: Pray for unity among the Charis churches and ministries across Japan. May God strengthen relationships, foster cooperation, and inspire mutual support among the workers in the field.

  • Spiritual Growth and Multiplication: Ask God to deepen the faith of believers in Japan and empower them for ministry. Pray for the multiplication of churches and ministries, so that the message of God’s grace may spread throughout the nation.

  • New Workers and Resources: Pray for God to raise up more workers for Japan. We need people who can serve in established ministries as well as pioneer new ones—the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Seek God’s guidance in whether He may be calling you to serve in Japan.

As the Charis Alliance movement continues to flourish in Japan, the O'Dells’ legacy of faith, sacrifice, and cultural sensitivity stands as a powerful reminder of the impact that one obedient step can have in transforming lives and communities for generations to come.
